13 Days to Escape Tools Guide: Saw, Screwdriver and Power Drill

Last updated:

13 Days to Escape tools and what they do: the 110-cash Saw, 25-cash Screwdriver and free Power Drill, plus how each one opens the escape route.

Quick answer

Three tools carry the escape route in 13 Days to Escape: the Saw and Screwdriver, which OJ sells at cell 13 for 110 cash and 25 cash, and the Power Drill, which is free on a workshop workbench. The Saw removes your cell window bars, the Screwdriver unbolts the toilet so it can be moved aside, and the Power Drill drills through the dirt walls in the tunnel under the toilet.

Two of the three are bought from the same vendor and one is found for free, but all three are separate obstacles in the same escape route. The table below is the quick lookup; the sections after it explain how each tool is used and when it becomes available.

The Saw: cutting the cell window bars

The Saw handles the first obstacle in the objective chain, and it is the tool that turns your cell window into a way out. OJ — the orange-jumpsuit NPC at cell 13 — sells it through his "OJ's Deals" menu for 110 cash, so you need at least 110 cash before the purchase.

Take the Saw to the bars on your own cell window (cell 13). Using it there plays a "Saw bars" progress bar; when that finishes the bars are removed. At that point the window is an open route out of the cell instead of an obstacle.

You do not have to cut the bars the moment you buy the Saw. In the recorded run this guide is based on, the player bought it at 04:23–04:34 but left the bars in place, then used the saw on them after the RETURN TO CELLS alert, between 07:15 and 07:44. Buying a tool and using it are separate steps, and the saw stays in your hotbar in the meantime. The cell door then locks for lockdown, and the removed bars are what let the player climb out through the window during it.

The Screwdriver: opening the toilet tunnel

The Screwdriver costs 25 cash and also comes from OJ's Deals; the OJ's Deals shop page covers the vendor. You need at least 25 cash, and the work happens in your own cell while the toilet is still in place.

Crouch at the base of the toilet and use the Screwdriver to "Unscrew" the bolts. With them out, the toilet can be "Move aside", which reveals a vertical tunnel opening in the floor. That opening is the start of the digging route; the move toilet page goes through that step.

Buying the Screwdriver also changes the objective panel's current task to "Unscrew the toilet", so the purchase registers visibly.

The Power Drill: free in the workshop

The Power Drill is the one tool you do not pay for. It sits on a workbench in the workshop marked with yellow-black hazard stripes, in the area behind the cell block, and picking it up costs nothing.

Reaching it is the part that depends on the other tools. The trip happens during lockdown: with the window bars already removed by the Saw, climb out through your cell window, sneak into the vehicle area behind the cell block, and enter the workshop. Take the Power Drill from the workbench, then jump into the tunnel under the toilet.

Inside the tunnel, hold the left mouse button to drill through the dirt walls. The digging guide and tunnels guide continue from there.

How the three tools fit together

Each tool clears a different obstacle in one continuous escape plan. The Saw handles the window: until those bars are removed, there is no way out to the vehicle area and workshop during lockdown, so the free Power Drill stays out of reach. The Screwdriver handles the toilet: it is what opens the vertical tunnel you drop into. The Power Drill then does its work only once you are down inside that tunnel, breaking the dirt walls.

That gives every tool a distinct job and explains why both OJ purchases matter to the route. The objective panel tracks the same chain: its current task moves from sawing the bars, to buying the screwdriver and "Unscrew the toilet", and finally to "Make your escape", and the panel always leads with the reminder "Don't get suspicious".

The recorded run also shows the order is flexible. The Screwdriver was bought during recreation time (06:17–06:36), but the toilet was unscrewed later, after the Power Drill had been collected; the Saw was bought at 04:23 and used at 07:15. What matters is that each tool is with you when its obstacle comes up. For the whole sequence from waking up to the tunnel, see the full walkthrough.

Paying for the OJ tools

The two tools from OJ add up to 135 cash — 110 for the Saw plus 25 for the Screwdriver. The Power Drill adds nothing to that total because it is free.

In the recorded run, the cash came from ordinary prison jobs rather than a starting balance. The player completed the potato-peeling job ("Peel potatoes 5/5") before buying the Saw, and later picked up litter ("Pick up litter 8/8", 20 cash) before returning to OJ for the Screwdriver. That is one example of raising the 135 total; the money guide and prison jobs pages cover the earning side.

Tool slots and durability

Tools go into a four-slot hotbar, and each slot shows that item's durability value — 202/500 was the figure seen in the recorded session. The hotbar is where you check which tool you are carrying and how much durability it has left as you move between the cell, the workshop and the tunnel.
